NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Greetings,
Welcome back to a new school year! Where did the summer go? It’s hard to believe the 9-week summer break has ended and we are now completing our first month of school. I hope everyone had an adventurous summer. I certainly had plenty of adventures with my family!
Our schoolhouse is humming away with magic. I love walking around in the morning to listen to and see how teachers are establishing relationships with their students, setting classroom expectations, and building routines and community with morning meetings. Each classroom has a different approach, but the end result is always a cohesive unit that trusts each other and relies on one another to problem-solve.
I’d like to give a big shout out to our new staff and welcome them to our wonderful community! In April we welcomed Emily Neuburger, Art Teacher and Shelly Sylvester, Student Support Teacher. September brought us Peter Nolan, Student Support Teacher; Michelle Connolly, long-term substitute for Kindergarten; Cameron Lewis, Physical Education Teacher; and Michelle Wolfe and Erica Barnes, Paraprofessionals. Please stop in and say hello!
Be sure to come to Open House on Thursday, September 27th from 6:30 – 7:30 PM. We are changing the structure this year to make it more student driven. Students are excited to take you on a tour of their classrooms and to meet all the specialists. We are hoping this new format will allow the children to showcase their classrooms, what they are currently learning, and introduce you to all the teachers that work with them. Don’t forget to sign up for Parent/Teacher Conferences in the wing of each hallway before you leave.
Happy Autumn!
Kelley
We will be sending digital copies of the Current, please let the office know if you would like a paper copy.
T.E.A.M. SRS Update
TEAM SRS is excited to announce a change to our Fall Raffle Baskets Fundraiser. In the past, classrooms have created their own individual baskets to raise money for classroom supplies and activities. This year we will join forces to create three substantial baskets. We are hoping by streamlining our baskets, they can be bigger , better, and more bountiful! Baskets will be raffled off at the annual Monster Dash fundraiser on Friday, October 26th. The proceeds from the raffle will be divided equally among Preschool through Grade 6 classroom accounts.
In previous years teachers have used their funds for specialty items in their classrooms and special projects aligned to the curriculum standards. This year some wish list items are alternative seating and tables for classrooms and funding for the Preschool Bear Curriculum.
Donations will be accepted from all students, Preschool through Grade 6 to benefit the classrooms. The two baskets we are collecting donations for are Family Fun Night and Chocolate Confections. Our third basket, Dinner & a Movie, is already generously donated by Ms. Sullivan and Larry.
Don’t forget that we have tee shirts, sweatshirts and Dean’s Beans coffee for sale in the office!
Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 9th at 6:00 p.m. Childcare is provided by Mahar Key Club and as always we love to see new faces and hear new ideas. Come join us!!!
Thank you for helping TEAM SRS fund our children’s classrooms!
Music Update
As the year starts up, the Music Room is already alive with exciting activity. We are looking forward to having our largest student band this year, with over 30 students participating. Lessons for students and band rehearsals start the week of September 24th.
In other news, Swift River’s music program recently acquired the resources to teach African Drumming during the school day. Students will be learning to play on a variety of Western African instruments, reading notation, and playing as a group. With Drum Circles being such a popular activity in our community, we are excited to bring it to our students on a regular basis.
I am very excited for a musical year with Swift River!
