NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Greetings,

And Happy New Year to all our students, families, and community members! I hope that all of you were able to enjoy some fun and relaxation over the Holiday Recess and that everyone is feeling recharged and ready to take on 2019!

Many thanks go out to our staff members who brought so much generosity to this Holiday season. Also, our thanks go out to Diemand Farm for their kindness in donating turkeys to all of our families in need! We are so grateful for our amazing Swift River community.

Please be sure to check out the following sections for important updates from TEAM SRS (including upcoming events!) and the Student Council. The Student Council is very excited to share their new Menu Planner (attached to this Current)! And we are so excited to receive your feedback on possible new menu choices!

We’d like to remind parents that our driveway is a one-way street! Please enter the driveway at the lower end, and proceed through the upper parking lot to exit. Also, please remember to stop behind any vehicles with unloading students! Additionally, we’d like to remind parents that anyone leaving the office area must sign in at the front desk. We encourage parents to say their goodbyes at the front door and allow students to walk themselves to class as we work to foster independence and reduce distraction for other students.

It’s budget season, and I invite everyone to set aside some time in their busy schedules to attend their town’s Select Board meetings, along with any School Committee meetings and Finance Committee meetings as we begin to work on the school budget for the next fiscal year. We welcome your input!

Fondly,

Kelley

Music Notes

Thank you to all our families and community members for coming out to support our students at this year’s annual Winter Concert. We are so proud of the musical achievements our students have worked so hard to present. Congratulations to all of our Swift River students for another amazing performance!

Enchanted Forest Feature

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who purchased pizzas and cookies during our Hillside Pizza Fundraiser. With your support, we raised over $800 to benefit our program!!! Pizzas will be available for pickup next Friday, January 25. Please stay tuned for more details, including pick-up time and location. We are so fortunate to have such a generous and supportive community. We hope you enjoy your delicious pizzas!

T.E.A.M. SRS Update

TICKETS ON SALE NOW: Supermarket Sweep will take place on Sunday, April 7 this school year! The drawing will be held on Friday, April 5 at Community Sing. Fill out the attached flyer for your chance to grab as many groceries as you can in 2 minutes from Hannaford Supermarket in Athol! Only 150 tickets will be sold! You do not need to be present at the drawing to win.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Dinner Angels will take place on Wednesday, March 13 during spring Parent-Teacher Conferences.  TEAM SRS will host Bowling again this year on Sunday, March 24! Be on the lookout for flyers coming home soon.

Due to the lack of snowfall this winter, this year’s Winter Warmer has been cancelled. A Spring Fling event is in the works, so please join us at our next meeting to help with the planning on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:00 PM in the Café! (Childcare will be provided free of charge in the gymnasium.)

Student Council Scoop!

The Student Council has had some very successful Spirit Days so far! We have collected over 1,000 non-perishable food items to donate to local families over the Holidays, as well as a little over $100 for the Teacher’s Toy Drive, which helps ensure that our local children enjoy a wonderful Christmas.

Currently, the Student Council is working with Darcee in the Café as they meet to discuss new menu choices. Please be sure to fill out the Menu Suggestion Planner attached to this Current to help Darcee and StuCo as we generate ideas and decide on some new favorite lunches. THANK YOU FOR YOUR MUCH NEEDED PARTICIPATION! And thank you for your support of SRS!

Student Artists Needed

Run!  Walk!  Cheer! The Rabbit Run is coming on Saturday, May 18! The Rabbit Run is a fun and challenging 10K race or a pleasant 3 mile walk through the gorgeous trails near the Quabbin and the New Salem Common. And it counts towards the 100 Mile Club!

The Rabbit Run is an awesome race in many ways, especially because the race tee shirt is ALWAYS designed by Swift River students. We NEED your designs! Designs should be drawn in blue or black ink on white 8 ½” x 11” paper. Students, please submit your designs to the office no later than Friday, March 29.  And don’t forget to include your name and grade on the back of your design!

Any students or staff or community members who are interested in running, walking, or volunteering at the Rabbit Run should contact Carla Halpern at (978) 490-6606. Remember, if you want to volunteer AND participate, your registration fee will be waived!  This is going to be SO MUCH FUN!

Yoga for Parents and Caregivers

Natalie Reynolds, RYT, will be offering special yoga classes to parents and caregivers. These traditional Hatha yoga classes will be gentle to moderate in difficulty, and they will include some breathing techniques and meditation. The intention of this series is to not only strengthen and increase flexibility, but also to feel nurtured and restored.

The classes will run on Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:15 PM at Swift River School, starting on Wednesday, February 6. Bring a mat if you have one (some extras will be available)! Cost is a sliding scale from $8.00 - $12.00.  20% of the proceeds will benefit the Grade 6 trip to Nature's Classroom. Please contact Natalie with any questions by phone (call or text) at (978) 544-3757 or by email at [email protected]!

Namaste.
