NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Greetings,

Last week we invited parents to a very important School Committee meeting about the Opt-Out Movement at Swift River School.  Unfortunately, the School Committee did not have a quorum and they were unable to vote. They did stay and listen to the concerns of the public regarding standardized testing and they agreed to hold an emergency meeting to vote.

Tonight the School Committee will meet at 5:30 PM in the Swift River Café to vote on a resolution that would support teachers and families who are in favor of opting out of standardized testing. I would like to invite you to come and learn about the Opt-Out Movement at Swift River tonight!

The PTCA will host their monthly meeting tonight at 6:30 PM in the Café. Please join us so you can be part of event planning for the rest of the school year.

Fondly,

Kelley

Congratulations to Gillian Budine

On Wednesday, March 9, our Community Network for Children Coordinator, Gillian Budine, was presented with the 2016 Brain Builder Award from the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley and the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care.

Gillian was one of six recipients chosen out of over 100 program coordinators in the state. Brain Building in Progress has organized nearly 100 Coordinated Family and Community Engagement networks across the the Commonwealth who work to support the development of young children. They provide programs, training, and resources that support children's brain development and help raise awareness of the importance of high-quality early education opportunities in ensuring all children enter school ready to learn and succeed.

We congratulate Gillian for this success, and thank her for her ongoing efforts to provide our community with outstanding early education programming.

Library Lines

Another amazing Books in Action party was held last Friday night—thank you to all of our awesome volunteers!

Swift River School staff members included: Jill Putala and Ms. Haggerty—who did math problems and shot hoops all night, Danika Tyminski and Mrs. Newman (aka Lotus & Pandora)—who prepped kids for their Broadway auditions, and Chris Wings—who served up some New Orleans fun!

Special thanks to our wonderful Principal, Kelley Sullivan, for spending the evening with us!

Parent volunteers and bakers included: Robyn Vitello, Jodie Vezina, Lisa Jenks, Cindy Phelps, Andrea Frost, Dara LaPlante, Deb Rolski, Josh Chase, Amy Borezo, Trevor Kearns, Patty Savage, Shannon Santana, Amy Simmons, Sarah Brouillet and Margie McGinnis!!! We couldn't have an event of this magnitude without your help!

Special thanks go out to Bub's BBQ (visit http://www.bubsbbq.com/) and Wildwood BBQ (visit http://www.wildwoodque.com/) for donating the delicious BBQ pulled pork. Of course the best way to thank them is to eat at their restaurants!

Some of the activities included Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, Minute-To-Win-It games, Zentangles, a New Orleans café and more.  All activities were based on the list of 25 MCBA Mashup books.

Congratulations to the winning team of the Battle of the Books: Isaac, Amber, Katrena and Jeffrey!  All of the teams did an amazing job, and I was so impressed with their knowledge of the MCBA books.

Make time to read,

Betsy
