NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Greetings,

As we wind down the school year, I would like to thank the residents of New Salem and Wendell for supporting the Swift River School budget and capital improvements at their respective Town Meetings. We are all proud of the accomplishments our students have made, and your continued support helps us to do our jobs even better, and our students to advance even more.

I would also like to thank all the volunteers who have made this year so successful. We are very grateful to have a network of people that help out in various capacities, such as in the classrooms, at the Book Fair, on Field Day, and at the 100 Mile Club. Also special thanks go out to our Fire and Police Departments. Without all of your support, these activities would have looked much different. Your willingness to donate your time has been greatly appreciated. I hope you’ll join us again next year.

After 11 years of service to Swift River, Karen Dean, Secretary and Enchanted Forest Extraordinaire, has decided not to return next year. Instead she will be providing care for her twin grandbabies! We all wish Karen a joyful retirement and thank her for her many years of service to our students. May her two littles ones keep her running around and entertained for years to come!

I look forward to seeing you soon at one of our upcoming events.

Fondly,

Kelley

Field Day!

Field Day for Grades K – 6 is tomorrow, June 10! Please apply bug spray and sunscreen at home; do not send it to school. It is very helpful if students have a water bottle labeled with their name for the day as well!

Library Lines

The Scholastic “Buy One, Get One FREE” Book Fair is open today (Thursday, June 9) until 5:30 PM and tomorrow (Friday, June 10) from 8:30 AM until 5:30 PM. There are some great bargains to be had, while stocking up on summer reading material!

There are many summer reading programs available to encourage children to read. Your child received information this week about many of the programs listed below. The New Salem Public Library and the Wendell Free Library will once again offer their wonderful summer programs filled with many activities. Please check with the local libraries for specific information.

Barnes and Noble offers a summer reading program where children entering Grades 1 – 6 can earn a free book when they answer 3 questions. There are some wonderful titles available this year! Each child was given an entry form; you may also visit your local Barnes and Noble store or go online to www.barnesandnoble.com/summerreading/. This is available to children in Grade 1 through Grade 6 (entering Grade 1 – 6 in the fall). This program runs until September 6, 2016. Supplies may be limited, so don't wait too long!

TDBank is giving $10 to children who read ten books, which is deposited into a new or existing Young Saver account. Again, each child was given an entry form or you can visit your local TD Bank or go online to www.tdbank.com/summerreading.  This program is offered through August 31, 2016 and is open to children in Kindergarten through Grade 5.

I have also included a Chuck E. Cheese Reading Reward sheet. Children read every day for 2 weeks and place a checkmark in the appropriate box. They will receive 10 free tokens when the form is taken to a participating Chuck E. Cheese.

The library shelves are filling up, but we are still missing many books! All library books are due by Monday, June 13! Bills for missing/lost books will be mailed home next week. PLEASE help your child return their library book(s) as soon as possible.

Summer vacation is the perfect time to read. Relax and enjoy some good books!

Make time to read,

Betsy
